Favorite Cocktails

There are a number of good online resources for cocktail recipes, although most suffer from being too inclusive.  My clear favorite is DrinkBoy.com. Check it out.

Amaretto Rose
· 1.5 oz. Amaretto
· 1.0 fill with Club Soda
· 0.5 oz. Lime juice
Pour amaretto and lime juice over ice in a tall glass. Fill with club soda and serve. (Note: Substitute Kahlua for Amaretto for a different treat.  This and Kahlua Rose make for a very nice summer highball.)

Bourbon Crusta
· 2 oz bourbon
· 0.5 oz. Triple sec
· 0.5 oz maraschino liqueur
· 0.5 oz lemon juice
· 2 dashes Orange bitters
Combine ingredients in an ice-(half) filled shaker, shake and strain. A slightly sweet but flavorful cocktail; use a good bourbon, of course.

Fancy-Free Cocktail
2 ounces bourbon whiskey
½ ounce maraschino liqueur
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash orange bitters
Shake with ice. Strain into cocktail glass. Similar to Bourbon Crusta, but without the Triple Sec this cocktail is a bit drier; the Angostura bitters also adds its own depth.

Casino
· 2 ounces gin
· 1/8 ounce lemon juice
· 1/8 ounce maraschino liqueur
· 2 dashes orange bitters
Shake with ice. Strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry. Similar to Fancy-Free Cocktail, but, of course, with the complex flavors of a good gin.  Fairly dry, despite maraschino liquer.

Martini (classic)
· 1 1/2 ounces gin
· 1/2 ounce dry vermouth
· 1 dash of orange bitters
Stir ingredients with cracked ice and pour into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon zest.  If made without the orange bitters, garnish with Spanish olives.  For those who order their martini very dry, a plea:  Stop confusing the world and just ask for a gin, shaken or stirred, served up.  Martini should have vermouth; I like the classic 1:5 ratio.

Royal
· 3 oz rye whiskey
· 2 tablespoons (0.5 oz) ginger beer
· 1 tsp sugar or simple syrup (dash)
· 1 dash Angostura bitters
· lemon twist
Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into cocktail glass, garnish with lemon twist. Note: this recipe can also use brandy.  This may sound odd, but try it.  Simple syrup, by the way, is simply sugar and very little water, mixed to a syrup; for fast simple syrup, add a little water to sugar and place in microwave, heating in short (7-10 second) bursts checking after each burst to avoid overheating and the bubble-over consequence.

Sidecar
· 2 ounces Brandy (cognac)
· 1 ounce Cointreau
· 1/2 ounce lemon juice
Shake with cracked ice. Strain into frosted cocktail glass and serve.  The better the brandy or cognac, the better the Sidecar–a general principle to apply to any and every cocktail.  This is an excellent and elegant cocktail that should be a cocktail party staple.
